President's message

I am honoured to serve as President of ITE Toronto Section, which at 623 members stands as the largest section in the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers district. We are at a pivotal time in transportation where we are being challenged by disruptions in technology and processes. Advances in technology have outpaced regulatory policy and reforms. When I began my career in transportation more than a decade ago, discussions of autonomous and connected vehicles, drones and the sharing economy were limited to papers discussed at the Transportation Research Board (TRB). As transportation professionals we have become pioneers as we help to develop new tools to ensure that our transportation networks can benefit from these advances in technology while protecting for the safety and accessibility for all users of the network.

Thanks to our Provincial government sustainable transportation is making a comeback with the development of Regional Express Rail, experiments with high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes and autonomous vehicle testing on highways. The success of these initiatives will require that ITE Toronto Section take the lead in facilitating new ideas, solutions and providing the forum for debate on the future of transportation.

In order to serve you better, we want to hear from you and understand your areas of interest. Become engaged in ITE, through this website, or through our social media channels on Twitter and Facebook. One of our goals for ITE Toronto Section in 2016 is to provide a forum to support students as they transition into our profession. We are looking to our members to partner with us to help mentor and coach students. Please stay tuned for more updates. Please feel free to contact me directly with your ideas and suggestions.
